It's more than just hair...

when asked about what I do for a living, I often get weird comments when I say I am a hairstylist. Some say, “oh that’s it?”, other, “that’s not a real career”, and of course, “it’s just hair. Why dont you get a real job”.

Now of ocurse, I do not get these comments often. But whenever I do, I often think to myself, well , this is not just hair.

I’ve been a hairstylist for 6 years now. In these past 6 years I’ve meet some great people; mainly women. And every time (except for just a few instances), I’ve got to be a theraphist for those women. I’ve been an ear when they need to vent their feelings about whatever it is going on in their lives. I’ve been able to see some of their kids grow and go to college. And for the most part, we’ve built some sort of friendship and we get to catch up all while I just do their hair.

When I do a hair consultation, these women (my clients), get a feeling of who I am and I get a feeling of what they’re looking for. Maybe a whole new look to feel something again. Or maybe they just want a trim. Whatever the case, my clients are in my chair for a reason. They want to FEEL. Feel pretty, confident, validated, wanted, happy, get out of a funk…but they want to feel. And I get to be that person who is lucky enough to give them maybe even just one of those feelings. But is it luck? is this a good thing for me? I could really fck it up and mess up their whole day, week, month or even an interview or date or wedding date!!! Jeez, the list goes on and on! But wait, Maybe I can do this and be lucky enough to do things right and make their day, their week…make them feel something good!

Whenever I get a text message or review from any client, I can’t even describe the feeling THEY are actually giving me. I feel like a million bucks! But isn’t that how I’m supposed to make them feel? Well, maybe the feeling is mutual. When I get that message, is almost like a validation and reminder to me that I am doing what I was supposed to do. I get to give a stranger a great feeling by “just doing their hair”. And in return, I get the satisfaction to know that, I was able to give them a good hair day.

So yes, this isnt your typical coorporate job or the job you dream of when you’re 7 years old. But this is my passion. I get to make money while I chatty up with a client who can drink some coffe or wine all while I get to make my own schedule to be able to spend time with my family. So, yes, this is more than just hair.

Safe and pretty!

Hey Bownitas!

I wanted to write this little blog to talk about the new guidelines at the salon.

Today is Monday August 31st 2020 and I am OFFICIALLY back at the salon 😁😁😁😁😁😁

With that being said, there are new guidelines set by the State of California for new safety, cleaning and prevention measures. For the most part they are nothing new to what we all have been dealing with in our daily lives after COVID-19 rocked our world (and not in a good way at all).

To make your experience at the salon as “normal" as before, these are some simple ways to know the do's and dont's for your next hair appointment…

#1) Do- Do use mask at all times while at the salon (they are mandated and REQUIRED by the state). As uncomfortable or annoying as they may feel, we all have to do our part for the safety of you, my coworkers and others. MAJOR DO- Add a few drops of your favorite essential oil to the inside of your max to relax while I shampoo and massage your scalp away!

#2- Do- Do wash your hands when you arrive and as often as needed for 20 second with soap and water. We have 2 restrooms available and stocked with antibacterial soap and individual towels. Hand sanitizer is available throughout the salon as well.

#3- Don’t- Don't come in if your are feeling sick or ill or if one of your household memebers is sick or ill. Or if you had a gathering and one of those friends/family are sick, please let me know asap so I can reschedule between 14 to 30 days after. I myself will advise you and my salon if I feel sick or ill.

#4- Don’t- Don’t bring any extra guest to your appointment. Our capacity is limited at this time so please no kiddos, friends, moms/dads or your honey.

#5- Do- Do feel free to use contactless payment such as Venmo or contactless credit/debit cards. Also, do check your email for my COVID-19 liability release form (you can sign at the comfort of your home or office via DocuSign no meed to print it) which will be sent a few days before your scheduled appointment.

#6-Don’t- Don’t arrive to your appointment with sweaty, oily or greasy hair. Clean hair is always the best way to go to help me stay on track with my schedule. You may wash the night before or the day of your appointment, but please arrive with clean dry hair :)

#7- Do- Do enjoy your time with me! I absolutely looove doing what I do and I want you to enjoy your time! So please feel free to ask if you want water or coffee (no pastries or snacks available at this time…I know, I miss them too). Enjoy your time while at my chair and be assured I have taken all the necessary steps for cleaning, disinfecting and sanitizing procedures.

I hope i didn’t miss anything here but honestly, it's not as terrible as it seems as long as you and I put in the effort to follow the rules and guidelines (mask, wash your hands, use hand sanitizer and stay home if you’re sick). Cant wait to see you all Bownitas and get those pretty locks ready for the fall!

My top 5 favorite hair styling products.

I started this new year by wanting to try new hair products and review them. From smoothing creams, oils, hairsprays, dry shampoos, texturizing and more, I narrowed it down to my top 5 “cant style without" products.

Here are their cons and pro of my top 5…

#1- This is my ultimate favorite, will never go with out styling product…. Olaplex #6! It protects, smooths and manages my hair without weighing it down. I use it after I wash my hair and ONLY about a quarter sice on my palm, rubb my hands together and distribute it from mids to ends and i any left over on my fingertips, I use by my airline (since i have some funky frizzy baby hairs there). I comb thru and blow dry as usual. It smells pretty good and no residue or heaviness. PRO TIP: store your bottle upside down for easier dispense. Sold at La Posh Salon and Spa

#2- IGK First class charcoal setox dry shampoo. This is an absolute fav! Ive tried many many dry shampoos and although I am one to shampoo every day (🙈 i wokout and sweat waaay to much), this dry shampoo helps my oily scalp but mainly, it gives me a great boost at the root without being stixky or flaky like a root boost. Gluten free, UV protection, paraben & sulfate free! Give it a try! You can find this at Ulta.

#3- Guy Tang #MyControl SPRAY. With medium hold, this hair spray is a staple at home and at the salon. Every client looves this hairspray after i finish curling their hair because it offers great hold with out being sticky, flacky or rough and it smells like grapes !!!(at least to me lol). You can get this at La Posh Salon and Spa.

#4- Another staple at home and at the salon….MoroccanOil Perfect Defense heat protectant (not showed…I ran out). A misty, great smelling product that protects the hair up to 450° which PLEASE PLEASE PLEEEEASE never use that temperature when flat ironing or curling your hair! Make this you staple at home to protect your hair agains heat damage and color fading from high temperature styling.

#5- MoroccanOil does it again with their Dry Texture Spray. For all hair types, this tecture spray has a soft kinda gritty feel on your hair and let me tell you, it does a great job! Great for short and medium bobs, a-lines and even long hair looking to get those effortless beach waves. Available at La Posh Salon and Spa as well.

So there you have it. Those are my top 5 favorite styling products I've been consistently using at home and at the salon. Give them a try and let me know what you think.
